5 small things that helped me after my accident

After my car accident, everything felt different. These are a few simple things that helped me cope when my mind felt overwhelmed and nothing felt normal anymore.

After the accident, I honestly didn’t know where to start. My mind was constantly racing, I felt on edge, and even simple things felt difficult.

I thought I needed a big solution — something that would fix everything quickly. But what actually helped were small, simple things that I could repeat every day.

1. Slowing things down

I stopped trying to rush everything. Even simple things like making a cup of tea or getting ready became something I tried to do more slowly.

It sounds small, but it helped my body calm down.

2. Getting out of my head

When my thoughts were spiralling, staying still made it worse.

Even walking around the house, stepping outside, or doing something physical helped interrupt the constant thinking.

3. Keeping things simple

I stopped putting pressure on myself to “get better quickly”.

Some days, just getting through the day was enough. And that had to be okay.

4. Creating small routines

Having a basic routine helped me feel a little more in control.

Nothing complicated — just small things like waking up, having a drink, getting some air, and giving my day a bit of structure.

5. Reminding myself this would pass

There were times it felt like it would never end.

But I kept reminding myself — even if I didn’t fully believe it — that this feeling would pass eventually.

Something important

You don’t have to fix everything at once

If you’re struggling, focus on small steps. Small things repeated over time can make a bigger difference than trying to change everything at once.

I’m still learning, still working through things — but these small steps helped me start.

And if you’re going through something similar, I just want you to know — you’re not alone in it.
